Daylily planting advice needed.

Post by aykhan »

I got a hold of some really nice daylilies. This time around the fans are good sized, mostly double fans or robust single fans. I am attaching a picture for you to get an idea how the plant looks like, not all are this big, some half this size. They were dug out last Monday. I plan on planting them in Lahore the coming week. I am concerned with the amount of heat these days and so need advice as to how best to plant them. I would hate to put them in pots till the weather eases a little bit since I already have too many extra pots and most of my seedling plants will be going into the ground this monsoon so I'll have just too many extra pots. I would prefer to put them directly in the ground but if that is a bad idea I will go with the pots. I was thinking, maybe put them in the ground and then put the green shade cloth on top with the help of bamboos and then water twice a day to keep the roots moist till the rains come? Any solid advice will be appreciated.

Plant the shoe in the ground ( in sun) and fans in pot (Shade of high trees).

Pot has the advantge of shifting to a suitable place and was recommended keeping in view the currenr hot dry spell

I do not think that heat will kill day lily even if it is in full day sun though i would not recommend it in this heat. Transplant shock will be the major issue. When you shift from pot into ground after a few months or so then do not let the plant know that it is being transplanted again otherwise it will take another few months to recover. I would prefer the daylily rooting through the pot bottom(question is how to achieve it naturally) to minimize the root disturbance.

I am growing day lilies in both pot and soil bed. Both are struggling in this heat as they are not established yet but the ones in ground are in much better condition as the temp fluctuation does not affect them much.

Point to be considered is the exposure of roots to heat. The temperature of soil in pot is much, much higher.
To me container gardening is not an option but a necessity.

May the best would be to pot them now and next month when temps go down into the 90s then I can put them in the ground. Why wait a few months to do that Khabbab?

I agree that put them in pot in shade and after months transplant in such a way that roots do not get disturbed.
